LA LAGUNA DI VENEZIA
Ci sono almeno sei buonissime ragioni per considerare la laguna di Venezia un luogo pregiato secondo i criteri della Convenzione Internazionale di Ramsar per la tutela delle zone umide. La prima sta negli oltre 100 mila uccelli acquatici che scelgono l'area lagunare per svernare. Le altre ragioni sono rappresentate dalle cinque specie che praticano questo "turismo" invernale in provincia in un numero d'esemplari superiore all'uno per cento dell'intera popolazione mondiale della specie stessa. Questo è accaduto per lo svasso piccolo, il mestolone, la folaga, l'airone bianco maggiore e il piovanello pancianera. "Residenti" (stabilmente o anche solo per una parte dell'anno) in provincia risultano essere 107 specie diverse: per 86 delle quali si può già oggi essere certi che sono nidificanti. Le più diffuse sono la rondine, la passera d'Italia, il merlo, lo storno, la gazza. Diffusi un po' ovunque si trovano i cardellini, le capinere, le tortore dal collare, i verdoni e le passere mattugie. Ad abitare l'ambiente provinciale ci sono oggi anche specie che da dieci anni non si vedevano più fare il nido da queste parti: la poiana, il falco cuculo, il lodolaio, la beccaccia di mare, il gabbiano corallino, la cincia mora, l'averla capirossa e lo zigolo nero. Segnali naturali di un ambiente non troppo compromesso, di un adattarsi della natura alla presenza dell'uomo e ai danni che troppo spesso provoca.

THE LAGOON OF VENICE
There are at least six excellent reasons for considering the Venice lagoon a special site according to criteria established in the International Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands. The first lies in the more than 100 thousand waterfowl which choose the lagoon to over-winter. The others are represented by the five species which practice this winter "tourism" in the province with a number of individuals higher than one per cent of the entire world population of the species concerned. This has been the case for the black-necked grebe, the shoveler, the coot, the great white heron and the dunlin. There are at least 107 different species "resident" (all the year round or just for part of the year) in the province. For 86 of these, there is already certain evidence that they also nest here. The most common are the swallow, the Italian sparrow, the blackbird, the starling and the magpie. Also widespread just about everywhere are the goldfinch, blackcap, ring dove, greenfinch, and tree sparrow. Today some species have returned to nest here after an absence of ten years: the buzzard, red-footed falcon, hobby, oystercatcher, great black-headed gull, coal tit, woodchat and cir bunting.
